Cedar Rapids , Iowa

In June 1957, the Ten Commandments monolith was donated to the city of Cedar Rapids by the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Through the many years of the statue standing strong, is has withstood legal battles and during the incredible flood of 2008, which wiped out almost all of the downtown business district and several thousand households, the Ten Commandments monument was knocked over.

With the volunteer help of Coonrod Wrecker and Crane Service, Iowa Valley Monument Company and Marion Aerie #4522, Cedar Rapids Aerie #2272 re-erected the monument on Mays Island . This is a wonderful tribute showing that these commandments will live strong for many years to come in the city of five seasons.

The Eagle Riders would like to thank all of those who attended our Soup and Sloppy Joe membership drive on March 6th.   We also would like to thank all of the members that donated desserts and those that assisted us in having a successful event.

A special thanks to the Boogie Woogers for providing the entertainment, Brenda Smith for the Jello Shots, the Ced Rel Supper Club for the hamburger and Steve at Whirlpool for donating the refrigerator.

The event raised money for Boys & Girls Club and we were able to donate to the Cancer Society the Eagles Club Charity of the month.

We are starting to plan for our next big event which will be held sometime in the next few months.

Thanks again – Eagle Riders

JOB WELL DONE! It took all of us to make our State Charity night a success on Oct 23rd. By working together, we raised $2972.07 for The Handicapped Development Center. To all of the volunteers, your hard work and dedication was overwhelming! Special kudos to Don Balsanek for lining up donations for the auction and to Craig Moenck for stepping in at the last minute and being our auctioneer! And to all of the members that bought a ticket, donated or purchased an auction item or ate a meal – Your generosity is awesome!
THANK YOU CEDAR RAPIDS EAGLES!

Eagles Donate School Supplies to Harrison Elementary

Cedar Rapids, IA (August 20, 2010) – The Fraternal Order of Eagles Local #2272 delivered over 30 backpacks full of school supplies to Harrison Elementary in Cedar Rapids on August 16, 2010. The effort is part of the Eagles Club’s ongoing community service program.

Aerie and Auxiliary members presented the staff of Harrison Elementary with backpacks filled with supplies needed for the new school year. Members of the organization collected the supplies over the last month. The Eagles selected Harrison Elementary as the recipient of the supplies because of its proximity to the Eagles Club.

“Many of the students that attend Harrison live in the Time Check neighborhood,” says Auxiliary Trustee Ruth Van Deusen. “This is an area that was severely affected by the flooding in 2008. Many of these families are still recovering from that disaster. Any little bit that we can do to help will strengthen this neighborhood for the future.”

“The Eagles’ motto is ‘People Helping People.’ If we didn’t help the people who are just down the street, what good would we really be doing?” says Aerie Secretary Dave Kleppe.

Cedar Rapids Eagles Celebrate the 4th of July to Dunk Diabetes

Cedar Rapids, IA (August 8, 2010) – The Cedar Rapids Eagles Aerie #2272 held its annual Fourth of July Weekend Celebration from July 2nd to the 4th at the Aerie home. The event raised $2,118.37 for the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center in
Iowa City, Iowa.

The weekend was filled with fun and fundraising! Activities included a dunk tank, bake sale, pool, shuffleboard, baggo, and Wii bowling tournaments, karaoke, and a band. Aerie and Auxiliary members, as well as others in the community, volunteered to get dunked to defeat diabetes. And everyone was able to see the city’s fireworks show from the comfort of the Aerie home without having to worry about traffic and crowds.

“Anytime we can have fun and, at the same time, raise money for a good cause, it’s a win-win for us,” says Jason Van Deusen, Aerie Trustee. “Being ‘People Helping People’ is what
 we like to do.”

The Fraternal Order of Eagles is an international, non-profit organization with over one million members. For more than 100 years the Fraternal Order of Eagles has continually worked to make the world a better place to live. To learn more about the Fraternal Order of Eagles,

District Divas Doing Great with Entertainment

WOW – what more can be said? If you were in Ft Dodge for Western Zone or in Columbus for West Central Regional, you know what I’m talking about. If you weren’t – you truly missed out. What talented entertainers we have in Iowa (and Nebraska, too). Now, of course, there are those who are perhaps more entertaining than they are talented. But the end result was they had fun and so did the audience. In Ft Dodge, SE Lakes did a great job with their rendition of “Laugh In”. Of course “Dick Martin” and “Dan Rowan” opened the show and Phyllis Diller (Julie), Goldie Hawn (Lisa) and Carol Channing (Faye) were all there to entertain us. We even had a special appearance by Sonny & Cher (Russ & Deb Clark). But the funniest thing had to be the park bench routine by Ruth Buzzi (Barb) and Arte Johnson (Shorty). She’s small, but mighty. Barb, you pack a powerful punch - which Shorty can now attest to. And at WCR, what a wide array of talent. Deb, as always, did a great Patsy Cline and Mike, no doubt, did a wonderful Hank Williams. Scott from Bellevue was super as Elvis. But, the piece de resistance had to be the appearance from one of the 1960s most popular couples – Sonny & Cher. Weren’t they great? OK, that’s a matter of opinion. Mike, I’m sorry to say, but you do make a much better Hank than you do a Cher. And Kevin, you reminded me more of Captain Kangaroo than you did Sonny Bono. But one thing is for sure, you definitely had everyone in stitches, not to mention those who may have overheard your conversation in the bathroom while getting ready. That part of the story is hilarious. It really was a lot of fun which is what the District Divas and I had hoped to achieve this year with the entertainment that’s been planned. The Grand Reps at both functions were very pleased with what all of you did to add excitement to yet another weekend conference and that’s what we have to get back to – having fun at our functions. Sure seems like we are headed in the right direction this year. Even had some of the Reps doing the “Penguin Dance” and “Chicken Dance.” Thanks to Deb Gilson for coming up with the ideas and to SE Lakes Divas Deb Clark and Julie Ervin for acting on it. You girls are doing an awesome job – so much, in fact, I’ve heard rumor that we may have another Diva about to join in. To the other districts in Iowa – Hawkeye, Tall Corn, West Pott and 3 Rivers – you will definitely have to work hard to beat what we’ve already seen. Do some of these fun things at your own club and plan to bring your act “on the road” to someof our upcoming conferences. Everyone seems to be having fun with the hippie era. Those who are too young to remember the ‘60s and ‘70s are finding it to be a cool time and those that were here are re-living some fond memories. Long live the ‘60s and the generation that swore they’d never die. Kim Haidsiak SMP
